On The December 6, 2017

The Université de Lyon and the University of Tokyo, the prestigious Japanese institution, have renewed their cooperation agreement for the next five years, as part of the International Alliance program.

The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) and the Université de Lyon (UdL) signed their first cooperation agreement in 2012 based on already well-established links both in training and research.

After the Todai Forum, held in 2011, numerous scientific workshops were organized alternatively in Japan and in France so as to reinforce and develop new avenues of research and collaborations.

The special bond between the Université de Lyon and the University of Tokyo was highlighted during the three official trips to Japan of delegations led by the Métropole de Lyon in 2013, 2014 and 2016.

Amongst the different cooperative projects, the IARI Program with the Graduate School of Frontier Science of the University of Tokyo is a success. The IARI program, financially supported by the French Investments for the Future programs, includes three member institutions of the Université de Lyon: Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, ENS de Lyon and INSA Lyon. It allows students in biosciences from both side to do international research internships.

This partnership is still going strong as a new workshop in biosciences is to be organized in Lyon at the beginning of 2018.

The Université de Lyon and the University of Tokyo also developed cultural projects. In close collaboration with the Museum of the University of Tokyo, the Université de Lyon set up the exhibition "Jadis le Japon" in 2011. By 2017, the exhibition has been presented in different places such as the Parc des Bastions in Geneva. A book of the exhibition was created in 2016.

The Université de Lyon facilitated cooperation between the Musée des Confluences and the Museum of the University of Tokyo which led to the creation of the exhibition room Emile Guimet inside the Museum of the University of Tokyo.

This room was inaugurated by officials during the trip of the Métropole de Lyon in 2016 in presence of Mr Hubert Guimet, great-grandson of Mr Emile Guimet, the famous manufacturer and art collector who founded the Guimet Museum in Lyon and Paris.
